Top 5 things every girl Couchsurfing on her own should know

If I could have received a penny every time somebody told me: “But… aren’t you afraid?” during my two-month Couchsurfing trip all across the United States, I would have probably won a lot more than I won in Vegas. Yet, here I am, alive and well. So how do you survive while Couchsurfing in a different country as a girl on your own?IMG_7718 1) Check references. It might sound obvious, but references can and do make the difference. Sometimes, even people with tons of references receive the odd negative ‘he tried to take pictures while I was asleep’ bad comment. I tend to avoid those and go through people’s profiles thoroughly even if I’m desperate for a place to stay- you never know.

2) Say goodbye to kinky profiles . If you feel more comfortable, you can try and stay just with girls like this article suggests, but it’s not always possible. Sometimes you will find some profiles stating: “Only hosts women” and “You will be sharing a bed”. Unless you’re up for really awkward situation and/or the chance to be kicked out if you don’t bang them (I have heard of this, it has happened to some users and unfortunately these people exist), then AVOID.

3) Be aware of sexual tension Couchsurfing can be awkward sometimes: you’re in someone else’s house, someone you don’t know and that you’re going to live with for a few days. Plus, sometimes there’s sexual: it might happen that you either like your host or he (or she) likes you. Don’t freak out if they ask you to hook up: as long as they ask politely, they probably won’t bring it up again if you say no. And don’t jump on them: ask politely yourself.

4) If you feel uncomfortable, LEAVE. It might happen that things go wrong – and they will. You’re dealing with people, and people make mistakes. I was once waiting for a host in a shady-looking building – and he wasn’t showing up, wasn’t picking up his phone and all I had around me were weird-looking people asking me to get in their flat. I felt uncomfortable and exposed, so I left and managed to crash on someone else’s couch for a few nights. Never put yourself in danger: trust your gut and leave your phone’s GPS on to be easier to track.

5) You can totally do it I’m the living proof that Couchsurfing isn’t a website for murder victim spotting. You’re going to have an amazing time while doing it. You’re going to meet amazing people that will blow you away with their kindness. Just remember to take some extra care: unfortunately, we still live in a world where travelling alone as a girl can be harder than for a guy. But that shouldn’t prevent you from travelling.
