The East London Christmas Village: Winterville

If it’s even possible, this Christmas Londoners have more options to choose from as to where to spend the weeks leading up to the big day than last year. If you’re looking for a slightly less touristy, more East London version of Winter Wonderland, you’ll like Winterville in Victoria Park. IMG_8618_2

The entrance to East London’s own Christmas village Winterville is near Crown Gate, at the junction of Old Ford Road and Grove Road near Victoria Park (postcode: E3 5TB). Like Winter Wonderland, Winterville is open every day with free admission, but you will have to pay for rides, games, ice rinks, food and drinks. The closest tube stops are Mile End (District,Hammersmith and City & Central Lines), Bethnal Green (Central Line), Bow Road (District Line) and Bow Church (DLR). IMG_8627IMG_8625_2

From a roller disco to a number of arts and crafts markets like the Bizarre Bazaar ( in the Vine below), from street food trucks and stalls to club and comedy nights, Winterville is less of a mockery of a German Christmas market and more of what you would expect from a full-on East London Christmas venue. Shoreditch and Dalston’s most popular nights out (including the inexplicable “Horsemeat Disco”) have been transferred to the Roller Disco for the occasion.IMG_8631_2IMG_8621_2 IMG_8620_2IMG_8619

Unlike Winter Wonderland, Winterville is also quite easy to navigate without prejudicing the wealth of rides and events to choose from – including a Bud Spencer and Terence Hill option. You don’t need to buy tickets for all events: some of them are free, while others offer discounts for residents of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets or everyone within the E9 postcode area – probably following concerns the area was one of London’s poorest. BL422-Winterville-Square-map IMG_8632_2It’s easier to choose which rides to go on rather than what to eat from the never-ending number of food stalls at Winterville. I went for Middle-Eastern stews and churros with Belgian chocolate to hep myself brace the cold.

Winterville is the best way to enjoy a very London Christmas experience without bumping into the hordes of tourists in Hyde Park. Take advantage of it before it closes on January 1st!

L’entrata del villaggio natalizio made in East London è vicino Crown Gate, all’incrocio di Old Ford Road e Grove Road vicino Victoria Park (CAP: E3 5TB).
