Why I admire Couchsurfing Hosts

When you work 9 to 6 in a metropolis, having random travellers crash on your couch might not be your ideal of a relaxed evening. Yet, Couchsurfing hosts in over 10 USA cities were willing to put me up – and take me out – for more than a night, showing a kindness and a sense of community I had never seen before. Here’s why Couchsurfing hosts are the best people in the world.4bdbd453a503dbdda2588f36503116fc

Craigslist Joe
After a long day in my hectic-but-fun PR job, once again Netflix saved my evening. It took an hour and a half of Craigslist Joe to remember there’s a whole community out there that I still need to discover. Craigslist Joe is a documentary produced by Zach Galfianakis in which a guy who decide to live one month off people’s good will. To do it, he simply posted ads on Craigslist, an online community displaying free classified advertisements and forums on various subjects. On a much bigger scale, Joe did what I did from September to November: he relied on people’s kindness to find a crash spot for the night. Except that I used Couchsurfing.

At first, Couchsurfing sounded more like a fool’s errand (or a masochist’s fantasy) rather than something I could actually do. Even before I left for my two months into the unknown USA landscape I was expecting having to either go back or pay for accommodation. However, Couchsurfing hosts all across America blew me away.photo 5

Saying I was not feeling like myself when I left London for my American adventure would be an understatement. A summer made of toxic relationships, the end of my three-year degree, a stressful unpaid internship and saying goodbye to most of my best university friends had left me emotionally drained. All it took was landing on US soil to change my perspective completely.

From New York to San Francisco, the first and last stop of my coast-to-coast journey, my hosts re-established my trust towards the world. They were all willing to trust me, a random Italian girl living in London who shamelessly posted on her CS profile that she’s into death metal and loves American Psycho.

They gave me a place to stay in New York when I had no references, Couchsurfing’s number one tool to check whether your host or surfer is a creep or not.IMG_6807

They introduced me to their friends; they signed me up to their gym and gave me a free power yoga class; they picked me up from stations, drove me around, hosted me for longer than the average three days.IMG_7283

They gave me a sneak peek into Los Angeles’s glamorous nightlife with pre-screening tickets and talk shows with world-famous actors as guests; they got me a free pass for LA’s studios and took me on set, despite their busy working schedules.IMG_7833

They took me out to dinner at Google’s Mountain View HQ and showed me how they party in San Francisco.IMG_8321IMG_8273Why we need Couchsurfing
I can’t think of many other ways in which you can live in someone else’s shoes and learn about another culture or, simply, another life without staring from the outside with the lens of tourism. Couchsurfing is the only social network that encourages you to actually go all out, talk to people and go out of your comfort zone instead of comfortably sitting inside the four walls of your apartment.

Why I haven’t hosted yet – and why I will start soon
But why, if I love Couchsurfing so much, haven’t I hosted much yet? I have just started a new job and I want to be able to give my surfers everything I can when they crash on my couch. Since I’m still settling in, I’ve had very few people over so far.

It’s so easy to get caught up in your routine and to forget that you can still help people – and help yourself. Through Couchsurfing, you can feel like you’re travelling and you can live your own city through your surfers’ enthusiasm. You can be inspired by their life story and establish life-long bonds.

Sometimes I forget how much of an optimist I can be. Luckily, Couchsurfing is there to remind me.

Come?
