Summer Tales & Kansas Smitty’s opening weekend

I like to show my couchsurfers a good time, so this weekend I took advantage the most talked-about new openings – Summer Tales in Old Street and the coolest new speakeasy in town, Kansas Smitty’s Bar on Broadway Market – to give him a glimpse of what you can expect from East London.IMG_0096

Summer Tales

To welcome the British summer (which may or may not exist – I’m not here to judge), Old Street’s Red Market, set in between some of East London’s most evocative street art, has been turned into an urban jungle by the team behind last year’s hugely successful Night Tales.IMG_0087

Unlike Street Feast, Summer Tales isn’t free entry: you can either book a ticket in advance (£10) to avoid the terribly long queues or hope for the best and get one of the £5 first come, first served tickets.IMG_0084

Despite not being a fan of non-free entry venues, Summer Tales last weekend proved to be worth it. After going through the intricate entrance made of leaves and tree branches, we found ourselves in a bustling space with DJs, cocktails and the street food I’ve always failed to try because I have to be an adult and work 9 to 6.IMG_0088

Aside from the compulsory coconut drinks stand Coco Face, the most exciting stall for me was the healthy fast food and salads by Shoreditch’s new Los Angeles-inspired joint Bel Air. Bel Air serves “feel good fast food” and it’s the brainchild of Andrew Bredon, who tried to escape the English winter in LA in 2014 only to come back and bring Californian-style fresh, delicious, healthy food back to London.IMG_0100IMG_0099

Bel Air is unfortunately only open during weekdays, but at Summer Tales you can now try all its goodness even if you work all week. Unfortunately, its whole incredible menu wasn’t all there, but I got the chance to try a selection of three of its salads for £5.50. I went for a fresh serving of kamut, tomatoes and spinach; a yoghurt, broccoli and chia seeds salad and the spiciest and tastiest of them all, a grilled aubergine and chilli salad with pomegranate seeds.IMG_0101

Far from offering just one street food option, Summer Tales hosts five cocktails and drinks stalls – including one on the terrace – and more mouth-watering street food.IMG_0105

Go for Forza Win’s Italian-inspired fast food, with the choice of getting a happy meal for £8 including either fried chicken or a burger, their rosemary salt fries and a dreamy Frangelico milkshake – all served with a smile and an attitude to make you forget you’re in London freezing your ass at a street festival.IMG_0103IMG_0109

Kansas Smitty’s Bar

But Summer Tales wasn’t the only exciting new opening this week. After tearing the house down in one of my favourite clubs (The Arch by The Dead Dolls Club in Bethnal Green) for about a year, the Kansas Smitty’s jazz band finally opened their own venue in Broadway Market – and it’s set to be the coolest hangout of the summer.IMG_0112IMG_0116

Fresh of exciting reviews from Time Out and The Evening Standard, The Kansas Smitty’s bar is a true N’Awlins style speakeasy you can find (shh) under Broadway Market’s Off Broadway behind a big black door.IMG_0115 IMG_0120

Being a fan of the band, I couldn’t help but go on the opening weekend – and man, it was worth it. Serving headstrong juleps in tin jars and New Orleans beer, The Kansas Smitty’s bar was a full house last Saturday, and when Italian-American saxophonist Giacomo Smith and Dave Archer played again we all couldn’t help but feel in a good mood.IMG_0114

The Kansas Smitty’s bar brought me back to the vibrant jazz nights of Louisiana… Can’t wait to be back!
