New year’s resolutions: to carb or not to carb?

Dry January, Veganism for a month, smoothie challenge, no-carb diet: these are only a few New Year resolutions people are taking up in 2016. I prefer eating everything. I designed my own diet and had a bit of everything: here’s what I’ve been eating so far this year.

Low carb

Jumping on one of the latest diet trends, Feed Me Primal serves Paleo food in the UK’s only paleo and primal street food stall. You can taste their grass-reared lamb with fennel seeds and spices, served with cauli-rice, lemon and spices, in Covent Garden and Sheperd’s Bush. It’s gluten free, grain free, low carb, guilt-free and totally yummy.

Vegan

Go for The Gallery Café‘s scrambled tofu, a feast of mushrooms and turmeric to have either inside this cosy Bethnal Green café or, if the weather is nice, outside in their wonderful garden.

Smoothies

Cuba is the land of incredible tropical fruit and my hosts made me a fresh one every morning. This fresh juice included blended guava, pineapple and papaya with ice. In London I get my smoothie fix from Andina and its incredible Peruvian smoothies or chill at Counter Albion sipping its hot counter cleanser, made with hot lemon, ginger, apple cider vinegar, cayenne and honey.

Mocktails

My favourite mocktail award goes to Soho’s Shackfuyu and their California Dreaming mocktail. A zingy cranberry, lychee & lime juice, this mocktail costs £4 and it’s served in a cute little bottle that won’t make you regret abstaining from alcohol for a month.

Bunnychow’s healthy breads

If giving up on carbs is too much, South African street food joint Bunnychow in Wardour Street will help you make dieting less painful. Their healthy breads (wholemeal, charcoal or matcha tea buns) are filled with zingy, spicy healthy salads and they make a unique guilt-free lunch option.

Or you could forget diet and get some carbs.

Sud Italia

After a week in Cuba spent eating only tropical fruit and seafood, I was really craving a good old Italian style pizza. The guys from Sud Italia, Spitalfields Market’s super cute pizza van, were kind enough to put two classics into one to have me try their zucca and pecorino and Sant’Antimo (sausage and fried vegetable) pizzas. The Sardinian girl approves!

Donna Fugassa

This just-opened focacceria and pizzeria is Dalston Square’s newest must-try location for a good Rome style pizza to go or to eat in. Try their mortadella focaccia and you won’t be disappointed.
