Located atop a 40-storey skyscraper at 110 Bishopsgate in the city of London, Duck & Waffle cooks up an interesting menu with local, rustic, seasonal and sustainable British ingredients. Open 24/7 and offering breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and late night menus, this restaurant is definitely one of the coolest and most innovative in London.

Despite it being a Monday night, Duck & Waffle was vibrant with excitement from a classy, feel-good clientele when we went. We managed to snag the best table in the restaurant, with a beautiful 180° view of The Gherkin, Tower Bridge and the whole of Bishopsgate.

We chose the lovely polenta chips with parmesan truffle to start with, the perfect snack to pair up with a glass of red and to get you ready for a very carb-heavy night. Duck & Waffle’s menu follows the tapas concept, but we got greedy and ended up sharing just the snack and a “small plate”.

Why the inverted commas? Well, our choice of tapas wasn’t a small plate at all: even shared between the two of us, the spicy ox cheek doughnut with apricot jam and smoked paprika sugar would have been a great stand-alone main. Tender, fluffy and dripping with jam, this starter is the perfect mix of sweet and savoury, a dish you won’t find anywhere else.

But you just can’t eat at Duck & Waffle without getting the duck & waffle. Imagine a sweet, filling breakfast waffle covered in maple syrup and enhanced by the crispy, tasty leg confit, topped by a runny fried duck egg. You will probably need to lie down afterwards, but the duck & waffle is a signature dish that takes on the ubiquitous chicken and waffles, remaining a truly unique dish.

We didn’t have enough after the waffles. So we got dessert – and what a dessert that was. The mushroom on toast are another example of how sweet and savoury are a match made in heaven at Duck & Waffle: an almond cake, topped with porcini ganache and brown butter ice cream, this is an odd yet fantastic dessert that you don’t see everyday.

Or, if you’re more of a traditionalist, you could always try the dark chocolate brownie sundae with peanut crunch, a decadent feast of brownies, peanut butter and Duck & Waffle branded chocolate.

Dinner at Duck & Waffle isn’t above the clouds just because of the restaurant’s height. It’s actually food heaven.
