sketch afternoon tea

Sometimes you just want to hide from life and drink pink Champagne in a pink tearoom where you can eat your heart out. sketch is that place: a classy hideaway to get excited about in between the hustle and bustle of Regent Street.

I honestly challenge you to go to sketch and leave without a daft smile on your face. All it takes is going in this perfect tearoom, made of pink sofas, pink fluffy armchairs and funny sketches on the wall to feel relaxed. Its muffled sounds and the absence of windows transport you to another world: a world where you can eat, and where you can eat a lot.

We started the afternoon with a glass of Moussé Fils Rosé made by the sketch team and followed by sketch’s own, terribly clever creation: a blend of Champagne Veuve Clicquot and Earl Grey tea with a spicy kick, enhanced by cold ice.

Starting from the assorted finger sandwiches, you can tell that sketch’s is not going to be just another afternoon tea. Aside from its corn-fed coronation chicken and cucumber and ricotta sandwiches, you’ll get a smoked salmon and Jacob’s cream panini served in between salty, tender focaccia and warm Comté cheese panini. Their take on the egg and mayonnaise, quail egg and caviar includes a tiny egg right on top and it’s as cute as it gets.

Even the China at sketch is special. The cute teapots and mugs include funny messages like: “Forget about it” or “Ghosts” and you can buy it in their own store.

Unlike every other afternoon tea, sketch’s scones also offer the fig jam option with the usual strawberry jam and clotted cream. Then it’s time for the cakes trolley. Starting with lovely tangy citrus meringue and malabar marshmallow served in a tiny “food” plate, the trolley left us speechless with its passion fruit tartlet, coffee cake, pistachio choux, cassis cheesecake served in a shot glass and chocolate and mint gâteau. We finished the day with a Yorkshire rhubarb and Tahitian vanilla cake with raspberry glaze and a lovely caramel and chocolate fondant cake.

sketch completely won me over. If I could marry it, I would. If I could move there, I would. The tearoom blends luxury and craft in its food and impeccable service with a playful yet classy attitude. The whole staff are incredibly cute in their French attendant uniforms or pink dresses, while the whole space reminds you of a playground for adults.

All it takes is getting in and seeing the sketch painted on the floor to know that you’re going to have fun. But the real treat is – unlike in any other place – inside the toilets. You can reach the white, stainless room by going up the stairs… And you then find yourself in front of the most Instagrammed toilets in London. Egg-shaped and with a recording of the Apollo 13 landing, even sketch’s toilets are unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.

sketch is just flawless. You’ll go in for a tea, you’ll go out feeling like you don’t ever want to leave.
