826 NYC, on 372 Fifth Avenue Brooklyn, is more than just a superhero supply store. However cool the shop’s props are, they’re a front for a much nobler purpose.
Behind a secret door, 826 NYC hides a not-for-profit writing centre helping students from 6 to 18 develop their writing skills.
Meant to help students fight the stigma of needing help with studying, it provides after-school tutoring, writing workshops and publishing platforms for the students it helps. The team behind 826 NYC also organises field trips and in-school projects.
Although 826 NYC is the only one of this kind in New York, shops like this are very popular across all the US: its brother in San Francisco is a pirate store. The main point is to use a creative retail idea as a front for the not-for-profit. If you’re in Brooklyn, 826 NYC is worth a visit and a donation!

Nato per fronteggiare il pregiudizio contro gli studenti bisognosi di più aiuto, 826 NYC offre ripetizioni dopo scuola per studenti dai 6 ai 18 anni. Tramite corsi di scrittura, progetti di stampa e aiuto nel pubblicare storie, 826 NYC aiuta gli studenti a migliorare le loro capacitá di scrittura.
Nonostante 826 NYC sia l’unico negozio di questo genere a New York, quella di usare idee alternative per la vendita per aiutare l’associazione no-profit é un’idea diffusa: a San Francisco per la stessa causa un negozio vende articoli per pirati.
