McSorley’s Old Ale House is the oldest “Irish” tavern in New York City.
You can find McSorley’s on 15 East 7th Street in Manhattan’s East Village. It was one of the last of the “Men Only” pubs, only admitting women after legally being forced to do so in 1970.
Opened in the 1860s, McSorley’s hosted Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson among its most famous clients. The decor consists in newspaper articles (all about McSorley’s) covering the walls, sawdust floors and memorabilia dating back to the 1910s. Among the most notable items there are Houdini’s handcuffs, which are connected to the bar rail.
McSorley’s atmoshpere is exactly what you would expect from an old tavern. One of the customers even downed six ales at the same time by putting six glasses one on top of the other.
The head waiter, an old Irishman with long grey hair, is a legend. He can carry over ten beers with two hands and his attitude is far from the traditional friendly customer service.
He points a finger at you and all he asks you is: “You want beer?”, then comes back with two for $5 ales and expects money.
McSorley’s even appears in Sergio Leone’s 1984 film Once Upon A Time in America: the scene in which the five young gang members debate whether to take the dollar the bartender offers them to burn the newsstand or roll the drunk was filmed inside it.

L’atmosfera di McSorley’s é quella che ci si aspetta da una taverna. Uno dei clienti ha bevuto sei birre allo stesso tempo mettendo sei bicchieri uno sopra l’altro.
Il capo cameriere, un vecchio irlandese con lunghi capelli grigi, é un mito. Porta più di 10 bicchieri di birra pieni con due mani e il suo atteggiamento é ben lontano dalla tipica gentilezza americana. Ti punta contro il dito e tutto quello che ti chiede é:”Vuoi birra?” E ritorna con due birre per 5 dollari chiedendo soldi.
McSorley’s é stato anche il set di C’era una volta in America di Sergio Leone’s del 1984. La scena in cui i cinque giovani protagonisti discutono cosa fare col dollaro dato loro dal barista é stata filmata dentro McSorley’s.
