All the myths about California are true: once you get here, you never want to leave. Take a look at my weekend in La Jolla.
La Jolla is a wealthy suburb just outside San Diego. You can get there with a short drive from the city or with bus 30 from Old Town. Home of University of California San Diego, La Jolla is all beaches, caves, surfers and sun.
While Windansea Beach is mainly for surfing, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach and Scripps Beach are more for swimmers and joggers. But don’t underestimate the Pacific Ocean waves: they can be brutal! Be especially careful when venturing too far away from the shore and when swimming near the amazing cliffs in the area.The strength of the tide will pull you down and smash you against the rocks.
All the stereotypes about life in California seem to be true: Californians look and live very healthy and both surfers and girls look extremely fit and attractive. I tried to follow their lead at La Jolla’s Juice Kabooze near Pearl Street: it’s a small juice bar with plenty of choice of smoothies and salads. I went for a green lemonade made with kale, celery, apple, cucumber and for a Maui Salad with banana, watermelon, strawberries, cottage cheese, honey and sunflower seeds.
Everyone I speak to in San Diego – be it die-hard California-born locals or simply people who have moved here from somewhere else in the States – agrees that there is no better place to be than San Diego. Everyone here looks incredibly happy and kind: if you look like a tourist they will welcome you to the area, offer to take pictures of you or help with directions if you look lost.

Il mito della California é fondato: una volta arrivati qui non ve ne vorrete più andare. Eccovi la cronaca del mio weekend a La Jolla.
La Jolla é una zona facoltosa alla periferia di San Diego. Si può raggiungere con un breve viaggio in macchina o col bus 30 da Old Town. La Jolla ospita la University of California – San Diego ed é tutta spiagge, surfisti, foche e fantastici panorami.
Mentre Windansea beach é più adatta a chi ama fare surf, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach e Scripps Beach sono il massimo per nuotare o fare jogging.
Diffidate delle onde del Pacifico: sono fortissime e se andate troppo a largo senza fare attenzione vi travolgeranno e vi spingeranno sulle rocce!
Tutti gli stereotipi sulla California sembrano essere veri: sia i surfisti che le ragazze sono belli e in forma. Per provare a seguire il loro esempio ho mangiato al bar Juice Kabooze di La Jolla: provate la Limonata Verde con cetriolo, mela, sedano, spinaci e cavolo e l’insalata Maui con anguria, ricotta, fragole, banane, miele e semi di girasole.
Tutti quelli con cui parlo qui a San Diego, che si siano trasferiti o che siano cresciuti qui, mi dicono che non esiste posto migliore al mondo per vivere. Sono felici e gentili: se date l’impressione d’essere turisti vi danno il benvenuto nella zona, si offrono di farvi foto e se sembrate persi si avvicinano per darvi indicazioni.
Per capire di cosa sto parlando, godetevi la vista di San Diego al tramonto dal Monte Soledade. Posso trasferirmi qui per favore?
