For a girl with the word ‘Poison’ tattooed on her wrist and a black widow spider on her ankle, I took an awful lot of time to head down to the Old Truman Brewery’s The Power of Poison exhibition, running until early September. Here’s what to expect from one of London’s most engaging displays yet.
Exploring both the history and the chemistry behind poison, The Power of Poison will make everyone happy, be it families or murder mystery geeks (guilty), wannabe history plot theorists or snake and aracnide aficionados (guilty, again). 
The exhibition reveals what happens when humans and toxic substances collide. Through live animals (some lovely but deadly yellow frogs together with a yellow viper), multimedia, models and interactive presentations, the Brewery’s new installation shines a light on the history of poison, whether we see it as a defence against predators, a source of magical strength, or a life-saving medical treatment.
Having grown up with Sherlock Holmes’s adventures and Agatha Christie’s murder mysteries, it was great to see my favourite heroes in the literature cabinet of poison experts. A diagram showing all the poisons used in Agatha Christie’s novels showed what a mystery mastermind the author was.
Particularly interesting was learning how Alice In Wonderland’s Mad Hatter had a reason to be mad after all: the mercury used to fabricate hats was responsible for the trade’s peculiar behaviour back in the day. 
The Power of Poison costs £15 and runs until September 6th. Don’t miss it – you never know when you might be attacked by a rattlesnake…Â

Per una che ha la parola “Poison†tatuata sul polso e una vedova nera tatuata sulla caviglia, ho aspettato pure troppo prima di andare alla mostra The Power of Poison (il potere del veleno) alla Old Truman Brewery di Brick Lane.
The Power of Poison accontenta tutti, che siano famiglie, amanti dei gialli (presente!), teorici del complotto storico o fanatici di ragni e serpenti (presente, di nuovo).Â
La mostra rivela cosa succede quando gli esseri umani si scontrano con le sostanze tossiche. Attraverso animali vivi (una vipera gialla e una rana gialla e velenosa), contenuti multimediali, modelli e presentazioni interattive, la nuova mostra dell’Old Truman Brewery spiega la scienza e la storia dietro il veleno, che sia una difesa contro i predatori, la fonte di forza evocata tramite la magia o un trattamento medico salva-vita.
Essendo cresciuta con i libri di Sherlock Holmes e i romanzi di Agatha Christie, non ho potuto che essere contenta di vedere i miei eroi di sempre tra i personaggi citati. Un diagramma che mostrava tutti i veleni usati nei gialli di Agatha Christie conferma il talento immaginativo dell’autrice.
La mia sezione preferita della mostra è stata quella designata al Cappellaio Matto di Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie, che a quanto pare aveva una scusa per la sua pazzia: i cappellai dei suoi tempi erano costretti ad usare il mercurio per fabbricare cappelli, una sostanza che a lungo andare può causare pazzia.
The Power of Poison costa £15 ed è aperta fino al 6 Settembre. Non perdetevela – dopo tutto, meglio saper che fare in caso foste attaccati da un serpente a sonagli…
