Ten Things European Tourists Should Know About Los Angeles

The film industry and the media spoon-feed us with Los Angeles myths and stereotypes, but what should tourists used to travel in Europe know about the City of Angels?

1) Public transport sucks:
However cheap (just $1.75 a ride), public transport in LA doesn’t cover the whole city. Plus, remember to have exact change while getting a ticket on the bus, because you won’t get any from the driver. Some trains will get you to the main tourist spots – e.g. The Walk of Fame or Long Beach – but LA public transport is generally unreliable. The best way to see the City of Angels is by car.

2) It’s NOT a walkable city.
LA is so spread out that it doesn’t allow walking from one neighbourhood to the other. There is no way around it – don’t mistake this for LA laziness. The city is connected by freeways, so don’t walk too much if you don’t want to get run over or spend hours and hours looking at cars and concrete. Again, the best way to see LA is by car.

3) LA has some pretty terrible (but skilled) drivers.
Take extra care while crossing the road: people might run you over even if it’s your turn. LA drivers have to be skilled enough to survive the traffic… And that makes them ruthless.

4) Hostels are not fun.
I haven’t been to one, but according to most locals hostels tend to be the crashing spot for homeless people in LA. Many guests tell tales of stolen belongings and nightmare stays.

5) The Walk of Fame is everything but glamorous.
Despite being one of tourists’ favourite go-to places, the Walk of Fame on Hollywood Boulevard is not that exciting. The clubs and bars are tacky and expensive, the area is dirty and sleazy and there is a fair chance that either homeless people or drunk dudes will follow you around to ask for money or your phone number – or both.

6) LA’s population is not all made of good-looking actors.
The City of Angels is expensive and ruthless: many people come here from all over the Country and the world, from many different walks of life, to look for fame. Most of them don’t make it: some of LA’s streets and sleaziest areas are inhabited by dreamers whose fantasies of glory were crushed. Skid Row, in Downtown Los Angeles near the Greyhound Station, is definitely an area to avoid… Unless you’re attracted to the morbid charm of places such as the Cecil Hotel, one of the last places where the Black Dahlia was seen alive. Throughout the years, a bunch of serial killers stayed here leaving a trail of dead bodies behid them.

7) The police are not what they seem.
Everybody I’ve talked to in LA – from young professionals to social workers – hates the police. Their reputation in Los Angeles paints them as corrupted and violent.

8) LA isn’t as dangerous as it used to be.
True, in the ’90s it went through shootings, drugs and gang violence, but now the city is rising again and it’s one of America’s best foodie towns.

9) It’s not all concrete and beaches. Check out the Huntington Gardens in Pasadena for a peaceful oasis away from the hectic LA life.

10) Actors don’t roam around – especially not in Hollywood. The only actress I’ve seen was on set!

That said, LA has that run-down charm that David Lynch captured so well in films like Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire. It deserves a visit for its vibrant nightlife and its amazing variety of people, places, food, fashion. Don’t overlook it because of its differences from European cities.

Los Angeles va visitata in macchina.
