Uber, Lyft and Sidecar: the new designated drivers in the US nightlife scene

From the computer to the iPod, the Silicon Valley has been making our lives easier for decades. It is only natural then that new frontier of going out – or I should say of going back home – had to be born there: through Uber, Lyft and Sidecar, the new taxi and car-sharing apps, having a designated driver for your nights out has never been so easy.uber-cab

Founded in 2009 and based in San Francisco, Uber uses a smartphone app to connect passengers with drivers of vehicles for hire. Through the app, you can request a ride and track your reserved cab’s location. As of August 29, 2014, Uber was available in 45 countries and in more than 200 cities worldwide, and was valued at US$18.2 billion. Uber offers numerous services and different cars, depending on how much you’re willing to pay or if you want to share a ride. Uber-Taxi-NYC2-1024x615

Just like every good business idea, Uber has given birth to a wealth of competitors. The most famous right now is the California-born Lyft, known for its culture of giving fist-bumps to clients and for its characteristic pink moustache. Lyft’s idea is the same as Uber’s, but its purpose is to be friendlier and cheaper. Users in the US tend to call a Lyft if Uber’s price is surging for high demand. cards

The new kid on the block is Sidecar, that offers even cheaper fares and the possibility to share a ride. It seems to be the go-to ride once Uber and Lyft are surging. sidecar

These apps are revolutionising the way people get home in the US and in the world: if you want to drink a bit more, taking a cab is no longer that expensive. What’s more, especially for Lyft and Sidecar, it’s terribly easier to sign up, become a driver and earn some extra cash.
