Top 10 things I liked about Mainz, Germany

When you’re looking for destinations for a city break, Mainz, a university town on the Rhine, might not be the first place that comes to mind. It most certainly didn’t come to mine. However, after discovering it while visiting a friend, it turns out there’s quite a lot to like. Here’s my Top Ten things I loved about Mainz. IMG_9348

  1. Domplatz – the beautiful main square with a cathedral looking very much like Hogwarts.  IMG_9302IMG_9304
  2. It’s a walking city: you can walk to the main spots in less than half an hour and from the centre to the university campus in just under an hour. IMG_9347
  3. It’s a vibrant student town: an Irish pub a protest party against the closure of a student dorm (which was admittedly already in ruins) showed me how they party in Germany. Street art, independent films, litres of beer, bands, obscure remixes and strobe lights. Not bad.  IMG_9316 IMG_9321 IMG_9320 IMG_9328 IMG_9327 IMG_9323 IMG_9319
  4. Great public transport: everyone with a student transport card can take up to two guests on every bus during the weekend.IMG_9331
  5. Wonderful architecture: although most buildings have been renovated following bombings during World War II, their old breath-taking façades remained intact. St. Stephan’s Church even boasts mosaics by Marc Chagall.   IMG_9366 IMG_9376 IMG_9294 IMG_9368IMG_9371 IMG_9370
  6. Bakeries, bakeries, bakeries. Bread and pretzels. In every shape, size, and flavour.  IMG_9293 IMG_9292
  7. Tiny cheap cafés with interesting menus. Dicke lilli, gutes kind was my favourite: check out this orange and pomegranate seeds salad with beetroot dressing in a platter with bread and hummus. Most dishes are under €10! IMG_9338-0 IMG_9337 IMG_9341-0
  8. Some dirty old German grub. Nothing satisfies the hunger from a whole day’s journey like this mushroom and cheese Schnitzel I had in the lovely Augustinerkeller restaurant in the main centre.  IMG_9312IMG_9314IMG_9308
  9. Need I mention German beer?  IMG_9307
  10. Mainz has remained untainted in his Germanness and true to its roots, but it lacks nothing when it comes to modern nightlife, foodie scene and every comfort.IMG_9330 IMG_9356

I flew to Mainz from London Stansted stopping at Frankfurt Hahn (£77 return including return ticket for a coach to Stansted), connected to Mainz by a 1-hour long bus (€13).

I came back with the compulsory loaf of German bread… and with a headache given by a delayed flight. IMG_9384
