Out for cocktails in Chinatown’s best speakeasies

Ah, London’s Chinatown. At first glance, its loud rickshaws, the waiters begging you to eat at their restaurants and the hordes of tourists might make it look like the last place on Earth where you would want to spend your Friday night. But if you look a little harder, Chinatown has a speakeasy culture worthy of a noir American film. IMG_9427_2 The Experimental Cocktail Club Hidden behind an anonymous black door, The Experimental Cocktail Club is a cosy speakeasy with one of the most interesting menus I have ever tried, with exotic cocktail names such as ‘The Grandaddy’, the ‘Cha cha cha’ and ‘The Old Cuban’. Blending sweet and savoury ingredients and aromas, cocktails at The Experimental Cocktail Club are as impeccable as its 1920s criminal Chinatown vibe.IMG_9423_2 IMG_9424IMG_9418_2 Opium With a décor inspired by opium dens, Opium is not far from The Experimental Cocktail Club and, like its neighbour, it’s hidden behind an anonymous door to lure you in for a decadent feast of delicious cocktails and extremely strong Asian shots.IMG_9432 At Opium, you can choose among Aperitifs, Entrees, Mains and Digestifs – and although the bar does also serve some amazing dim sum, I’m talking cocktails here. I went for the fresh and tasty Blood & Sand (£12), a coupette made with 12-year-old Chivas Regal, Cherry Heering, Martini Rosso and fresh orange juice.IMG_9436_2 I then went for the ‘The Mysterious Yam Sing Shot’ (£4), an exceptionally tasty but deadly shot mix that changes every week presented in a small tea cup. IMG_9440_2 La Bodega Negra Closer to Soho, La Bodega Nera is a cocktail bar and a Mexican restaurant with an unlikely setting. Don’t feel intimidated – or turned on, who knows – by the neon signs on the front door promising you “Girls! Girls! Girls!” – it’s really not what it looks like. In perfect Soho style, La Bodega Nera only looks like a strip club, but is actually a vibrant bar with spicy cocktails and a Mexican menu worthy of LA’s best food trucks.IMG_9442_2 IMG_9443_2 So dimly lit that I had to use my phone’s torch to choose what to drink, La Bodega Negra is always crowded and the perfect spot for some late-night fun. I went for the Afilador cocktail, a fresh death mix of Ocho Blanco Tequila, Lillet Blanc, Maraschino, Orange Liqueur, lemon and absinthe. My friend chose a Watermelon Lush, made with Wyborowa Vodka, fresh watermelon, creme de mure and passion fruit.IMG_9444 Here is a picture of me socialising with one of the bar’s edgiest customers.IMG_9447_2 Chinatown and Soho, you will see me again. Ah, Chinatown. Foto: Carolina Are
